Continuously Beam-scanning Phased Arrays Using Low-cost Phase Shifting Elements

Abstract - With the rapid growth of wireless communication systems, phased arrays with continuously beam-scanning capability has been an essential requirement to achieve better immunity against interference and higher data throughput. In the literature, many previous designs are realized either by mean of a higher order of beam-forming network or by the adoption of phase shifting network. While the former solution to improve the spatial resolution dramatically raises the circuit complexity due to a large number of couplers and crossovers implemented in the network, the performance of the latter one relies heavily on the choice of the phase shifters, which are commonly a high cost and high insertion loss component. In this talk, new phase distribution networks (PDNs) and their applications to realize low-cost continuously beam-scanning arrays with two-dimensional scanning capability will be presented. The design details, including the formulation of the PDN, the realization of the phase shifting elements, the implementation to continuously beam-scanning arrays, the power handling capacity, comparisons and limitations, are thoroughly discussed.

 Tzyh-Ghuang Ma (S’00–M’06–SM’11) was born in Taipei, Taiwan, ROC(Republic of China),in 1973. He received the B.S. and M.S. degrees in electrical engineering and the Ph.D. degree in communication engineering from National Taiwan University, Taipei, in 1995, 1997, and 2005, respectively.

    He was with the University of Florida, Gainesville, FL, USA, from 2015 to 2016, as a Visiting Scholar. He joined the faculty with the Department of Electrical Engineering, National Taiwan University of Science and Technology, Taipei, in 2005, where he is currently a Full Professor and the vice chairman of the department. His current research interests include innovative phased arrays, active antennas, millimeter-wave antenna arrays, and miniaturized microwave circuit designs.

    Dr. Ma was a recipient of the Best Paper Awards at International Workshop on Antenna Technology (iWAT), Chiba, Japan and China, in 2008 and 2011. He was the Advisor of the Honorable Mention Winner in the Student Paper Competition at the IEEE Antennas and Propagation Symposium in 2011. He was the leading author of an IEEE-Wiley book published in 2017.

     He received the Dr. Wu Da-Yu Award, the most outstanding research award for young researchers from the National Science Council, Taiwan, ROC,in 2010. He received the Excellent Young Engineer Award and Outstanding Electrical Engineering Professor Award from the Chinese Institute of Electrical Engineering in 2012 and 2017, respectively, and the Title of Distinguished Professor from the National Taiwan University of Science and Technology in 2012. He received the certificate from the TRANSACTIONS ON ANTENNAS AND PROPAGATION for his exceptional performance as an Article Reviewer from 2009 to 2010. He received the Outstanding Associate Editor Award from IEEE ANTENNAS AND WIRELESS PROPAGATION LETTERS in 2017. He is the General Chair of 2021 International Symposium on Antennas and Propagation (2021 ISAP).

     He was an Associate Editor of the IEEE TRANSACTIONS ON MICROWAVE THEORY AND TECHNIQUES from 2017 to 2019, and an Associate Editor/Senior Associate Editor of the IEEE ANTENNAS AND WIRELESS PROPAGATION LETTERS from 2014 to 2019. He is now a Track Editor of the IEEE TRANSACTIONS ON ANTENNAS AND PROPAGATION.
