Abstract: An increasing number of latency-critical applications—such as industrial automation, edge robotics, mixed reality, and cloud gaming—are operating over wireless networks. Reducing the latency induced by these networks is crucial, as it poses a significant bottleneck to achieving consistently low end-to-end latency. Recognizing this important trend, both 5G and WiFi technologies have strived to support low-latency services. For example, 5G URLLC aims to achieve one millisecond transmission latency, a target that has yet to be fully realized. On the WiFi side, the next generation (IEEE 802.11bn) is set to prioritize Ultra High Reliability to better support latency-critical applications. In this talk, I will share lessons learned from my decade-long research in this field and present our recent progress in acquiring valuable lower-layer insights from WiFi and 5G networks in the wild. I will also discuss how these insights can empower agile adaptations at higher layers, bringing us closer to achieving consistently low end-to-end latency over wireless networks.

Short bio: Dr. He (Henry) CHEN is currently an Assistant Professor in the Department of Information Engineering at the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK), Hong Kong SAR, China.
